What is the VUCA environment and how does it affect companies?

What is the meaning of the VUCA environment?

The VUCA environment refers to a concept that determines the environment in which companies operate today. Its acronym is formed by the terms:Volatility (V), Uncertainty (I), Complexity (C) and Ambiguity (A). But what exactly is the VUCA environment for? The main function of VUCA is to designate a type of scenario in which companies are forced to constantly adapt to the different changes that arise in both their strategic programming and their professional routines.

The VUCA environment is present in almost all professional sectors of the market, such as: industries, services, technology, banking… In these sectors, technological advances and the fluctuations of the economic market are the causes of the inclusion of organizations in this type of environment.

Meaning of the VUCA terms:

The acronym of this concept (VUCA) refers to the four main characteristics that define this type of environment:

  • Volatility: it means that changes can occur in an unpredictable way, due to their speed, their extend to different products, companies, categories…or because they can appear on a small or large scale.

  • Uncertainty:  it refers to the difficulty that lies in knowing how to distinguish, what we really know, what we should investigate and the new information on aspects that we were not aware of.

  • Complexity: it implies that there are many forces that cause changes, which affect each other and therefore make unclear the cause-effect relationship.

  • Ambiguity: it refers to how those unknown aspects affect and cause uncertainty. The development of intelligent robots and artificial intelligence affect the way we work; however, we are unaware of what their real impact will be.

How does the VUCA environment affect companies?

Since the global crises that have arisen in the last decade and that have been boosted by the coronavirus, a hostile environment has been created in which companies work hard to avoid all costs being affected by the constant changes that occur, due to the technological advances.  This has caused a disruption in business planning, based on making rapid and radical changes in the management of organizations.

These companies have developed a set of tools to cope with the VUCA environment in an agile and effective way. These methodologies such as AGILE or SCRUM, have helped companies adapt to these changes and be more efficient. Therefore, they are able to rapidly introduce new modifications and have a better and realistic perspective of their projects. As well as, having a leader and a team of human resources as key pieces to be able to work and manage the VUCA environment.

Leadership in the VUCA environment:

We will now develop a series of functions that a good leader must have in the VUCA environment.

Every leader of any company must be prepared for all types of changes in order to achieve that the company steers towards success, while preventing it from sinking due to a possible mismanagement. When facing the VUCA environment, they must be able to cope with volatility with a vision of the future, to be able to combat uncertainty through knowledge and understating. Moreover, providing clarity, simplicity and agility.

All the team members of the company will search for guidance and to have a reference model in their leader, to be able to manage the emotions involved in the VUCA environment. Therefore, emotional intelligence in this figure will be essential to inspire and motivate the members, so that they are able to connect with their environment and achieve a sense of togetherness. In this manner the organization will reinforce their internal corporate culture.

In addition, this person must also have a high capacity of resolution and ability to adapt to changes. It is essential that they control a large number of elements and variables, to manage information in the shortest time possible, to therefore make effective decisions.

To sum up, the possession of soft skills and technological knowledge that a leader in the VUCA environment must have, is to help them with planning and decision making. Thus, a leader must always be informed with the new developments in the sector, to be able to integrate innovative solutions that will help their company be more competitive.

Keys to adapt to the VUCA environment

To cope with the VUCA environment, it is necessary to focus a business strategy based on knowledge and predictability, approaching it from two perspectives:

Constant learning: In an environment in which technological advances are continuously updated, it is essential to be frequently informed.

Facing changes: A correct and effective way to face the problems and difficulties that arise is to implement the values of effort and perseverance.

As we were saying, in the VUCA environment it is very important to be able to adapt to both changes and unforeseen events that arise within the organization.  Therefore, it is advisable to implement the following premises:

  • Addressing volatility with a correct vision of the future (V).

  • Facing uncertainty with knowledge, training, constant updating, and comprehension (U).

  • Providing clarity, simplicity and modesty in the execution of tasks and actions within the organization (C).

  • Putting an end to ambiguity with agility, by reacting with the capacity to face events that occur and that threaten the organization’s strategic planning (A).
